What exactly is a suit?

Traditionally, a suit is a two or three piece ensemble with a key element. Identical fabrics! That’s the ticket! Jacket and pants, maybe a waistcoat or vest as we tend to know it, all made from the same fabric, is what makes a suit, a suit!

We’ve come a long way from the suit being a uniform in daily wear. What we tend to see more often than not these days came from the Ivy Leagues in the 1950s and 60s. Switching up a jacket and pant combo, and in our climate pant and vest, is what we tend to see out in the wild. This is what Italians call Spezzato, or “broken”. Used the same for a broken heart or a broken arm. A bit different than the Ivy League style, this is where you would break up suits and use pieces from different ensembles to create a new one!

Surprisingly enough, a suit is actually considered an informal outfit in western culture. Originating in the 19th century, and evolving from the Traditional British Frock coat in the early 20th century, the “lounge” suit was born.

That’s just the beginning! There are a variety of styles, cuts, cloths and more when it comes to suiting! Thanks for joining in and I look forward to diving a bit deeper into our 21st Century Suit of Armor!

At Kalypso Couture, we believe that suits should be just like the people who wear them – completely unique, not generic or mass-produced. Our custom tailored suits are expertly hand-cut to your exact dimensions, so you can look great whatever your body type.
